Conor McGregor is the Interim UFC featherweight champion.
After years of talk and much speculation, Conor McGregor finally came up against an elite fighter and came out victorious.
Starting the fight, McGregor came out hard and attacked Mendes with his usual kicking and hard punching game. Quickly, though, Mendes closed the distance and after a few scrambles put McGregor on the flat of his back to win the first round.
The second started in a similar fashion as McGregor came out throwing but was taken down after a few stuffed takedowns. Mendes didn’t do much in the way of passing but did further damage to a face of McGregor which he had been cut in the first.
It looked as if Mendes was riding out the round on top but McGregor eventually escaped in the last minute of the round.
When they got back to their feet, McGregor looked fresh and went on full blown attack. Mendes, on just two weeks notice, felt the pressure and ate a litany of left hands as McGregor walked him down.
With seconds left, McGregor upped the pace and knocked Mendes to the floor. From there McGregor dove down and battered Mendes so much that referee Herb Dean stepped in and stopped the fight with mere seconds left in the second round.
For Mendes, it was a third UFC title loss but for McGregor it was an answer to many questions which ended in him lifting UFC gold.
Glad he put that little yank back in his box
