After breaking the pay-per-view record in his bout with Nathan Diaz at UFC 202 it’s straight back to business for Irish UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor with news breaking today on Sports Center that he will face Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.

Currently, Alvarez is the UFC’s lightweight champion and the fight will take place at 155 lbs as a Superfight with Alvarez’s belt on the line.
UFC 205 will also be the first ever event held in the state of New York following the legalisation of MMA in the Empire State over the last few months.
A former Cage Warriors lightweight champion, this will be McGregor’s first fight in the UFC at the 155 lbs limit having fought thus far at featherweight and welterweight.
McGregor (20-3 in MMA) was due to fight Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC 196 for the lightweight belt but the Brazilian pulled out injured and subsequently lost his strap to Eddie Alvarez in July.
Like McGregor, Alvarez (28-4 in MMA) was a champion before coming to the UFC having held the Bellator lightweight title on two occasions. This will be his fifth Octagon appearance following wins over the aforementioned Dos Anjos, Anthony Pettis, Gilbert Melendez and a loss to Donald Cerrone in his debut.
McGregor is currently 8-1 in the UFC with a win and a loss to Nate Diaz coming after featherweight victories against the likes of Dustin Poirier, Max Holloway, Chad Mendes and, most famously, Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds.
